Resurfacing — also called an asphalt overlay — applies a new layer of hot-mix asphalt over an existing surface that is structurally sound but cosmetically worn. It can restore appearance, improve smoothness, and extend the service life of pavement that isn't ready for full replacement.
The key question is whether your existing pavement and base are suitable for an overlay. Not every surface qualifies — if the base has failed, drainage is poor, or cracking is widespread, resurfacing would cover up problems that will resurface quickly.

RESURFACING / OVERLAY
Best when the existing surface is worn or surface-cracked but the underlying base is stable, drainage is adequate, and there's no widespread structural failure. An overlay restores appearance and extends surface life at a lower cost than full removal.
FULL DIGOUT & REPAVE
Necessary when the base has failed, drainage is poor, or cracking is widespread and structural. Full removal and reconstruction addresses the root cause rather than covering it — a larger investment that delivers longer-lasting results.
