Resurfacing — also called an asphalt overlay — applies a new layer of hot-mix asphalt over an existing surface that is structurally sound but cosmetically worn. It can restore appearance, improve smoothness, and extend the service life of pavement that isn't ready for full replacement.
The key question is whether your existing pavement and base are suitable for an overlay. Not every surface qualifies — if the base has failed, drainage is poor, or cracking is widespread, resurfacing would cover up problems that will resurface quickly.

How do I know if resurfacing is right for my pavement?

What's the difference between resurfacing and a full digout?
Resurfacing adds a new asphalt layer over an existing sound surface. A full digout removes the existing asphalt entirely, addresses the base, and rebuilds from scratch. Resurfacing is less invasive and less expensive, but only works when the base is stable. A digout addresses root causes and lasts longer when the base has failed.
Will resurfacing fix my drainage problems?
Not necessarily. If drainage is poor, an overlay may not correct it — water will continue to undermine the new surface. If drainage issues exist, we'll identify them during your site evaluation and recommend the right approach, which may include full reconstruction.
